Special Educational Needs Policy

Introduction
Crowthorne Village Pre-school believes that all children have a right to a broad and balanced early years curriculum. We provide a differentiated curriculum to meet individual needs and abilities. We welcome all children. Regardless of their individual needs and we aim to welcome them to an inclusive setting. In order to achieve this, we work closely with the children, their parents or carers and other agencies if this is necessary.

We aim to identify any difficulties a child might have and to work with the child and their parents or carers to address those difficulties.

We admit all children aged 2 years 6 months to school age. Sometimes a child may need additional support in some way ? we encourage parents or carers who think their child might have particular needs to talk to us about this. Back to top
Stages of Identification
Our system of observation and record- keeping, which operates in conjunction with parents, enables us to monitor children?s needs and progress on an individual basis. The following recognised stages are to be observed, as laid out in the Code of Practice as the gradated response.

Identification ? Pre-school concern. The concern is identified and specific objectives are introduced, with emphasis on small achievable targets.

Action ? Early Years Action: The SENCO continues to gather information, informing parents of concern, or advising them to consult outside agencies

Action plus ? Early Years Plus: The SENCO consults with specialist support services.

At each stage there will be a termly review in which the Individual Educational Plans [IEP] will be discussed and plans made for the next stage.

When a learning difficulty is identified, the views of the parents are sought and discussed before registering a Special Educational Need. Back to top
Meeting Needs
If it is felt that a child?s needs cannot be met in Pre-school without additional support or equipment, funding will be sought to employ an extra member of staff or to obtain the necessary resources.

We work in liaison with professionals outside of the group, including therapists, health visitors and psychologists, to meet children?s specific needs.

Staff are encouraged to attend training courses on special needs whenever possible. Back to top
Aims
Our aim is to provide for the development needs of each child in the Pre-school.
All children in the Pre-school, irrespective of their special needs, are encouraged wherever possible and appropriate to participate in all the Pre-school?s activities.

We will draw upon the knowledge and expertise of parents/carers in planning provision for the child.

The child?s progress and achievements will be shared and discussed with parents/carers on a regular basis.
